Recent Research Finds Coffee Drinkers May Live Longer on Average

Cup of Coffee

Do you need that caffeine buzz to get your day started at work? Is the smell of fresh coffee the first thing you look forward to when you wake up? Your morning cup of joe might healthier than you think. according to at least two recent studies, coffee drinkers may live longer on average than those of use who don’t drink coffee.

You might have heard that coffee is bad for your health in the past, but as it turns out, much of the research supporting that theory was conducted when most coffee drinkers also smoked and suffered from the associated negative health effects. Researchers at the time did not necessarily track which subjects smoked and which did not.

A far more recent study published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine followed half a million people ages 38 to 73 over a decade-long period. The researchers kept track of people’s coffee-drinking habits, smoking habits, health factors and mortality. They found that drinking anywhere from one to eight (!) cups of coffee a day was associated with a longer lifespan, regardless of how well the individual metabolized caffeine.

It’s interesting to note that the benefits extended to decaf drinkers as well.

Another study, reported in the British Medical Journal in 2017, linked coffee consumption with other health benefits, including a lower risk of diabetes, liver disease, certain types of cancer and more.
